Why doesn’t a plastic bag parachute work?
I want to parachute off a small building (like 2 stories tall) with a plastic bag. But something tells me this won’t work….
Can someone tell me why this doesn’t work? I mean, it has the same mechanics as a regular parachute in which the bag creates air resistance.
What if I stack plastic bags? Meaning combine and merge multiple plastic bags….
It’s not just the area you need to be concerned about, as in the other answers. You could have all the area in the world, and somehow safely manage to connect a whole bunch of them for “sufficient” area, and still have a catastrophe on your hands.
You need to structure the rope, where they’re connected, allow for some breathability via some air venting, etc. Otherwise, you’d have wing with poor aerodynamics. You could flip, it could collapse instantly, etc. You need to understand all the forces involved, including lift, drag, resistance, etc.
Your curiosity is great- just don’t do this. Go to a parachute class or two (they’re not that expensive) and you’ll see that there is so much more to it than simply making something with enough area to provide air resistance to counter gravity.
