Black Belt
What belt ranking is aquired after the 10 degree black belt or the highest equivelent?
In most schools or arts the ranking begins with white then yellow and then moves up from there to green, blue, red, brown and black. With black, it varries somewhat but in most cases there are one through ten degrees of black, from instructor to Grand Master or 10th degree. I’ve read that some Grand Masters have succeeded in superceeding that rank by re-aquiring the white belt rank. Please explain in detail.

This really all depends on the organisation and style. If you are talking about specifically Japanese arts then none of them really have any grade at all! You have modern judo to blame for the belt system I’m afraid. After 10th Dan you have the role of Soke or the grandmaster. But this can also be a misleading title as the soke doesn’t have to understand the art at all. He may just be the guardian of the densho or keeper of the family name etc. This applies to all of the koryu arts of Japan and not modern budo which is what most styles of karate and jujustu are part of. You also have Mikyo Kaiden or master teacher of a ryu. This is a license that is given to someone who has mastered all the techniques of the ryu. The thing to take note here is they have mastered the written techniques not the art or feeling of the art! Other organisations have levels or different stages of 10th dan. Some people will see these as being 11th, 12th and 13th dans etc but they are not! They are only honorary levels. So it all really depends on the organisation and the big players such as the ippon kobudo association etc. Its a common misunderstanding that you go full circle. You don’t! What happens is you go right back to the beginning except your now looking at the same thing with different eyes! Its all about seeing it for what it really is and understanding how its changed you?
