China Martial Arts
Did the first emperor of China, [Huang Di] introduce the earlist fighting techniques like Chinese martial arts?
In 2698 BC, Huang Di established the first martial arts because of his great knowledge of acupuncture which was created during the stone ages. I want to assure my curiosity.
According to Chinese legend and tradition, yes, but Huang Di is a legendary figure, almost like an ancient god. Historians do trace Chinese martial arts to the Xia dynasty more than 4000 years ago, around the same era that Huang Di (according to estimates) lived.
Chinese martial arts are certainly ancient, so one couldn’t possibly trace their origins to any specific individual except Huang Di, but to give you perspective, here are some other legends about him:
-he taught Chinese to weave silk
-his historian introduced the first Chinese characters
-his conception was signaled by a thunderclap from heaven
-he reigned for 100 years
-he invented traditional Chinese medicine (modern historians accept that it was compiled from ancient sources by a scholar living between the Zhou and Han dynasties, more than 2,000 years later)
If you’re going to believe that he invented Chinese Martial Arts, you should accept that all of the above are true. The earliest historical mention of Huang Di is in Shiji by historian Sima Qian around 100BC, well over a thousand years after he is estimated to have lived. He’s just too legendary and ancient to confidently attribute anything to him.
Some historians say that Huangdi evolved from a mythical god during the early Zhou Dynasty into a legendary emperor, his legendary deeds embellished along the way.
