Need some opinions on the Canon HF20, this question is for you Little Dog?
I’m hoping Little Dog chimes in on this question. Alright I still havent purchased a video camera yet and have taken in your consideration of flash memory. Now it says on best buy’s website that it has 32g of flash memory, but doesnt come with a card. I’m assuming its built in? Also you’ve brought up the point of making sure your computer can handle video like this. My PC has 80g left of a 250g 7200rpm hard drive, 4g ram, 8800 gts video card and double core 2.4gz processor and i’m running Vista Ultimate 64bit, should this be good enough? Also about video editing, will the windows movie maker that comes with vista be alright for the time being until I start getting more technical or is it junk? I’m mainly just plan on posting video’s on youtube and other websites like that and plan on using the video camera to record in car videos and videos of others racing. Thank you very much!

The Canon HF20 is an AVCHD MTS file camcorder. MoviMaker can’t deal directly with the MTS video files. If that is the editor we’re stuck with using, you can convert the video files – but they likely will not be high definition after you convert them. Then drag the converted non-high definition video to the MovieMaker capture area and timeline and edit. That HD video in the camcorder will never be HD again after it is converted. When it was converted, all the video data that made it high definition was discarded (high definition video has about four times more data than standard definition – that is why it is so crisp and sharp).
When the video project editing is complete, you render to computer readable files – or a VOB file that for standard definition so regular video players can play back the disc. Again, no longer high definition. The computer files should look OK – but still not high definition. If you want to render in HD, you need to capture and edit and render to HD. That means you need a video editor that can handle the high definition files from this camcorder – Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere usually float to the top – there are others. Personally, I prefer iMovie and FinalCut (but they run on Macs only).
My rule-of-thumb is to never allow a computer hard drive to get less than 20% of total space. This is especially important when the hard drive is the start-up for the operating system. No computer has enough RAM – and while at 4 gig, yours has more than most, it is still not enough to handle all the various computer operations going on – this is where the available hard disc space is REALLY important – your computer (especially when running Windows, Vista or Windows 7) needs that available hard drive space for “virtual memory”. On a 250 gig drive, 20% = 50 gig must always remain as free space. That means you have only 30 gig available to install a new video application and storing high definition video files and project files.
When the video is imported to the video editor, that activity decompresses the video from the highly compressed MTS file format. That 30 gig will be eaten up very quickly. An external drive should be fine if we have that option.
If I had to get a flash memory camcorder, I would not bother with the camcorder’s internal memory – but I would be getting memory cards for the video storage. If the camcorder breaks and there is video in it that has not yet been transferred to a computer, how are you expecting to get that video? If the memory is removable, pop the memory card out and use a cheap card reader to get the video into the camcorder (same with miniDV tape – just use another compatible camcorder, in my case DV/HDV).
In this case the difference between 32 gig internal memory and not is $50 (according to the MSRP at the Canon site) – check the Canon HF20 vs the HF200. So in my view, the additional flexibility and safety is the “investment” – HF200 and lots of SDHC (class 4 or better – actually class 6 or better is recommended) cards.

If you are recording racing and loud engines/exhaust, you MUST learn to use the manual audio control (page 78) or the audio levels can be distorted and record as muddy sounding or with lots of static (peaking) that cannot be fixed after it is recorded.
Also, be aware that lots of compression on the video capture and fast action do not get along very well. You can experiment – but I suggest you stay with the highest quality setting at 24mbps data rate. This is still less than HDV’s 25mbps data rate, but it will do better with fast action than the lesser data rates (that allow you to store more video on a card).

BUT let’s not lose site. I am not “recommending” any AVCHD camcorder – merely discussing the benefits of one consumer-grade AVCHD camcorder over another. AVCHD compresses WAY to much for my taste and the camcorder manufacturers have not provided a well defined, affordable, process flow for archiving the video.
If your computer has a firewire (DV, IEEE1394, Firewire) port, then you would be better off going the Canon HV40 route (and using ~$3 sixty minute miniDV tapes – 63 minutes of HDV format video – it is the least expensive, most stable, short and long term storage currently available). I don’t think your version of MovieMaker can deal with HDV either – the same suspects, Vegas and Premiere, can. Plus, when you are done editing, you can export the high definition video out to the HDV camcorder and use the camcorder as the playback deck so you can capture, edit and playback high definition video on a HDTV. How are you planning to watch the HD video on a HDTV using a flash memory AVCHD camcorder? (Hint: You don’t – there’s no equivalent export process out to flash memory camcorders… but you can playback unedited high definition video by connecti
