A Science Question for clever science people, it’s about dropping items in a vacuum?
When not in a vacuum, but just normal gravity, if you drop two balls, a basketball and a ‘fitball’ (one of those really huge round exercise balls that you can roll around on) from a three storey height, the basketball will hit the ground first because it is heavier, and smaller. Will this result be the same if it is done in a vacuum? Will the large volume of air in the fitball make any difference? Thank you.
I don’t think for those two particular objects, it would make much of a difference. Because of their spherical shapes, they have similar aerodynamics. The volume of air inside the fitball shouldn’t make any difference if it’s just filled with regular air, and not a lighter-than-air gas like helium or hydrogen.
However, if you were for example, to drop a feather and a basketball from the same height in an atmosphere, the feather would encounter more wind resistance than the basketball because of its shape, and the basketball would hit ground first. In a vacuum, the feather and a basketball would hit ground at the same time.
