Question about punching in Shotokan Karate (in competition / kumite)?
Are punches to the face allowed? Actually hitting them I mean, with force behind the punch. Or do you have to be more careful and try not actually touching?

Most karate tournaments allow controlled contact to the face. Hard contact is almost always not allowed. Same with kicks to the head in most tournaments. Bottom line will be the judges. If they feel that someone is using excessive contact, they may warn, or disqualify them.
They will tell you the rules just before competition begins.
