Hand Wrap
Are they hand wraps or gloves?
I’ve been a fan of the MMA world, but I am still kind of new. I always see the gel wraps under the hand wrap section. I felt them before and they look a little thick to go under some of the fight gloves. Are they wraps, bag gloves, both? What are its uses?
That’s a good question. For an actual boxing match hand wraps are used in combination with gauze bandages to protect the hands and wrist before putting the gloves on. This procedure is usually looked at and monitored by the boxing commission where the fight will take place (e.g. for Las Vegas it’s the Nevada state athletic commission) to avoid placing illegal substances on and in the boxer’s hand wraps which give the boxer an unfair advantage. (please see Antonio Margarito vs Shane Mosley) Examples of illegal materials include plaster of Paris which harden the wraps, strands of rope placed on the boxer’s palm which tighten the grip making the fist more solid, and the like. The wraps that we buy off the rack are used more for gym work and they emphasize safety for both you and your sparring partner hence the creation of gel wraps. Hope this helps.
