After taekwondo 1st dan, what else?
If I successfully passed my taekwondo black-belt test, what type of martial art should I go for next? Its like after yrs of training in tkd, i find that its mostly kicking techniques, in a sense, long-range combat. if the attacker gets close to me, there is no way I could execute those kicks. So i m thinking of something useful. maybe judo or karate or maybe even chinese wushu? but chinese wushu in singapore is kinda crappy and too broad-based too many styles to choose from. so which one? judo, karate or aikido? I personally tink judo is very effective since its consists of throws, grappling, close-combat and break-falling techniques.
I think this is a perfect example of most people’s attitude toward earning their black belt — they think it’s the end of the journey and they need a new destination. The truth is that you’ve only begun; as a 1st dan you only know the basics.
I’m not sure why on earth you think you can only kick — you have these things called hands…so use them and punch! Good TKD instructors also teach joint locks and grappling. Not a lot, since it’s not the focus of the art, but enough. If you instructor doesn’t, why not cross train? I train in Judo when my schedule allows. It’s not enough for me to ever expect to progress through the ranks, but it’s a good companion to TKD.
