I can remember in vivid detail the day I gave birth to our first daughter. Although it is almost 11 years ago now, when I  think about that amazing experience, it is as though I am re-living the experience right here and now. After the endorphins have subsided and you have returned to earth you look down at what was once a rock hard pregnant belly and all that remains is loose wrinkly skin, not dissimilar to a giant deflated ballon, that from your vantage point, seems to hang to your knees. What’s this? Some sort of joke, not funny!!

Well I’m here to blow the lid off this secret and tell you that there is a solution for this saggy baggy situation. Here are 7 reasons why the ancient practice of postnatal abdominal binding or wrapping is a must as you make the transition into motherhood.

Post pregnancy belly wrapping has been around for eons

For centuries, women from many traditional cultures around the world have been wrapping their post pregnancy bellies as a natural postpartum recovery technique. This tradition has been handed down from generation to generation, from mother to mother and is believed to be an essential part in ensuring the physical and mental health of mothers after the birth of their babies.

Not only is it believed that constant increased pressure against the abdominal area reduces the size of the swollen uterus, flattens the belly and redefines the waistline helping you to get back into shape quickly and naturally, it has also been shown to give additional support to the legs and back all while providing much needed support for your postpartum belly.

Most modern day midwifes and obstetricians agree that wrapping the belly post delivery assists in postpartum recovery.

Postnatal belly wrapping can assist in healing Diastasis Recti

Diastasis Recti is a common condition affecting approximately 15% of postpartum women. The condition is seen as a stretching and separation into right and left halves of the rectus abdominus muscle caused by the the growing uterus during pregnancy. Normally, the two sides of the muscle are joined at the body midline.

In postpartum women, the defect is seen when the abdominus recti muscles do not fully knit together after pregnancy, leaving a rather unsightly bulge of the stomach. This condition comes in varying degrees, from slight tearing to a full separation, which can give rise to herniation.

A postnatal belly wrap covers the lower abdomen which provides valuable relief by containing and supporting the abdomen, taking strain off the abdominal layers allowing them to heal without stress.

Belly binding can also assist recovery exercises by helping to encourage the muscles back together whilst also acting as a reminder to actively pull your belly back in toward your spine to engage your transverse abdominis.

Stretch marks are caused when the skin is pulled by rapid growth or stretching, resulting in tiny tears in the layers below the skins surface.
