Spherical Geometry?
Two radio astronomy towers wish to set up a radio link. Their longitudes/latitudes, respectively, are: 2degrees 18.4 seconds, 53degrees 14.2 seconds (a city in England) and 79degrees 50.2 seconds, 38degrees 26.3 seconds (West Virginia).
In what angular direction to the north must the antenna at t he first station be set to achieve the best trasmission, (i.e. the great circle direction)?
I am not looking for a numerical answer here, I only wish to better understand the problem. What I did first was draw Earth and the two long/lat lines and the north pole. I created a spherical triangle. I used the cosine formula to solve for the arc connecting England and West Virginia.
What does the question mean by angular direction to the north? What does the great circle direction mean in lamen(sp?) terms?
a great circle is basically the path that is the shortest traveling distance between 2 points on the globe. and its sort of arced if you draw it on a flat map.
if you have a globe and a piece of string or something, you can see this for yourself pretty readily, by pulling on it tautly and remarking “oh, it goes over newfoundland, how odd” or something similar.
the angular direction is just the angle between this straight line and a line going north.
