what are my Chances of Infection of a broken bone?
Well i injured my finger yesterday….and well i can move is very very little but it hurts extremely bad. I mashed it under 200 lbs of cast iron. I dont have insurance so hospital visit is out of the question. If it is broken it’s no big deal i can put a splint on it. But my question is what the chances of getting an infection and what are the signs of infection?
Actually fairly rare, unless you have some open wounds to go with it? The bone being inside the body isn’t open to infection, (unless you already have infection going on somewhere else), but if you have a wound around the break then the rate of incidence can be higher.
If you have open sores, soak the finger daily in an antiseptic and warm water. Watch for added heat, swelling and further pressure, also it will hurt like heck, even when splinted. Then you WILL need a doctor’s trip 
If there are no open wounds you should be fine. Splint it, but not so tightly that it cuts of circulation. Your best best is one of the metal finger splints which you can wrap a bandage around.
