Nylon Weight Lifting

600g cloubuster as weather balloon?

I’m going to use a 600g cloubuster weather balloon made from chloroprene to lift a weight of approx 1300g. I will be using 1.81 cubic metres of helium (98% pure) to lift this to a projected altitude of 90000 feet. Do you think the helium will be sufficient enough? (I used archimedes principle – but worried I may have got it wrong). Also, what do you think of the balloon?

My first reaction was that you need a little more helium. The lift would be rather slow and take many hours to reach 90K feet. If I were attempting this project, I think I would use medical hydrogen. It has a little better lift and is cheaper in most markets. Of course take necessary precautions when using the hydrogen. The train you have planned is ok for length, I am wondering about the nylon cord. Do you need something that strong? Just plain cotton twine is what is used on most weather balloons and works well and decomposes much more easily. Also remember, that the balloon has to be large enough to handle the expansion of the gas to 90K feet It will often appear to be severely under-inflated at surface in order to reach that level. I am not sure of the dimensions of the 600g balloon you are using but make sure it has enough stretch to make it that high.
