Quality Boxing Gloves
Boxing, Heavy Bag, Speed Bag, Everlast?
I am looking to start boxing, and there are some things I really want to know to get for my home. I am 14, 5′7″ and 145 lbs and i want to know which type of boxing gloves I should get (just for hitting the heavy bag in my basement), what type of speed bag I should get and what type of heavy bag I should get (and what weight).I’ve heard a lot about heavy bags tearing because of the poor quality, and I want to know if I should go with a leather, canvas or some other type of bag. If you could answer these questions it would be great.
I’ll answer all your questions right now. I’m going to assume you’re not on a budget, and I’ll name all pretty good quality stuff. I believe that if you’re in this for the long run, you might as well spend the money on good equipment, it’s worth it.
At 5′7″ 145, I’d recommend an a heavy bag anywhere from 70-100lbs. Stay away from the canvas bags, they’re terrible. Get a nice leather one. The difference is night and day.
You’ll need handwraps so your wrists and hands are protected. You’ll also need good bag gloves. Bag gloves usually come in 10 & 12 ounces. Bag gloves have stiffer, more dense padding to protect your hands and joints, as opposed to softer padding in Training gloves, which are more for mitt work, and sparring.
As for a speed bag, you have to make sure your platform doesn’t shake or move. Any movement or vibration will kill the bounce from your speed bag. Get a decent swivel too. The speed bag is something you’ll need to hook up properly with good equipment, otherwise you’ll keep running into problems. Get a larger speed bag, as they are easier to work with for beginners. Wear speed bag gloves or wraps for the speed bag, those punches thrown over and over on it will start to wear on your hands if you aren’t protected.
