Sports Equipment
Is it selfish if I want to buy various sports equipment?
I would like to have my own snowboard, skiis, a sled, figure skates, and maybe a soccer ball and hockey stick. Of course after I opened a savings account to save up for these things. But does it make you selfish if you would like to own these things, especially if they are expensive?
Personally, I come from the viewpoint that all things are done only out of selfishness. I think that one who gives to charity does so only for the feeling it invokes (either happiness at helping or pride in being a better person than Mr. Smith next door). I think that the soldier who fights and dies get into it for the honor, the adventure, or the feeling that SHe (she or he) can’t dissapoint little Billy by seeming a coward.
So yes, due to my personal thoughts, I count your desires as selfish. I don’t, however, label them as “bad.” I think it’s quite fine to desire material and want to be happy in life. In fact, you’re probably helping the world out by working for your equipment.
From some viewpoints incidentally (the ones who count soldiers and charity givers as purely virtuous and believe in purity of man), your desires would be seen as normal. Some of these people would likely tell you that you ought to be giving all your money to the destitute in third world countries, but those people probably got the idea from the $3,000 big screen television they own, and you’re definitely entitled (at least in my opinion) to have nice things in life.
