Sword Collecting Question?

I’m a sword collector and one of the things I like to do is use my new weapons in sparring. I don’t expect to get any money from them its just for show and a hobby. I love my blades but the nicks and scratches kind of take away from them. Should I start my collection over and not use them or should i keep the collection the way it is and get use out of them (by sparring)

If you can’t change something, change how you think about it. If you use them for sparring, they will get marred. To me, every scratch on the hilt of my rapier and every nick on the blade is a reminder of the enjoyment I’ve received and the skills I’ve developed while using it.

People buy swords usually for one of four reasons:

1) For sparring. It sounds like we are both in this category.
2) For cutting practice. This is supposedly a good way to perfect your form, since poor form won’t cut.
3) For the artistic value of the craftsmanship and design
4) For the historic value, whether it is an antique or a quality reproduction.

I think all are valid reasons. Many folks do more than one. That’s why the new Hanwei swords designed by Tinker Pierce come in matched blunt and sharp variants.
