Pros/cons of using polo wraps for lunging and flatwork?
i’m going to be working with my 5 yo ottb leasehorse tomorrow lunging and riding but only doing light flatwork (wtc) however, i think i’m going to lunge her in the grass field
and then ride in the sand arena, but i was thinking polos might help give her support in the uneven field and protect her legs a little
since the arena will most likely ne frozen
and hard. any tips? will polos give her supoport and protection or are you only supposed to use them when jumping?

The only real advantage to polos is that they look nice. This has been well researched by the equine scientific community, and polos offer virtually nothing in the way of any support to prevent overstretch injuries and tears like ligament sprains and tendon strains/bows. SMBs don’t prevent these injuries either, offering little more than nothing in the way of support.
So, polos can be a disaster if they are wrapped incorrectly, and offer next to nothing in the way of benefits.
Also, polos offer very lttle in the way of protection from blunt force injuries as from hitting a jump or interference, and also don’t effectively absorb shock forces.
SMBs with fetlock support, however, do offer both protection from blunt force injuries and shock absorption and are superior to polos.
The best prevention comes from conditioning the horse for the activity she will perform. I would not advise you to work the horse in an uneven field or on frozen ground. Neither wraps nor boots will prevent the potential injuries you risk by doing that.
