Is it possible to lose inches without cardio, but just yoga and weight training?
I used to do a good 45 minutes of cardio every other day, and ended up shrinking my upper body, when I was actually targeting my core and lower body. I know spot reduction isn’t really possible; trouble is, I’m not overweight, I just have a rather flabby core that I’d like to tone without losing weight overall and looking scrawny. I do 30-40 minutes of yoga every day. Any chance that’s enough to tone my body, or is it absolutely essential to supplement it with cardio? Again, I want to lose inches, NOT weight.

Yes, it’s possible to lose inches with yoga and weight training alone, it just won’t happen as fast, and you’ll have to be more disciplined with your nutrition.
Inches are still about body fat, and body fat comes off quickest with cardio. But some people who do nothing but Pilates have incredible cores, and I recently read a book by a fantastically fit woman who does only moderate weights with high reps.
30-40 minutes of yoga daily probably won’t do the trick. At the very least, you’ll have to add some weights or Pilates to your routine to get the results you want.
Incidentally, you won’t “shrink your upper body” with 45 minutes of daily cardio if you’re also training weights. The mistake some people make is to do ONLY cardio, in which case the body cannibalizes non-essential muscle to become a more efficient cardio machine.
I do cardio 6 days a week, but I also lift heavy weights, and I have more upper body strength now than at any other time in my life.
